Ohayou! Spank

Ohayou! Spank emerged in 1981 as a production of Tokyo Movie Shinsha, based on the popular shōjo manga series written by Shun'ichi Yukimuro and illustrated by Shizue Takanashi. The series follows a young girl named Aiko who moves to a seaside town and finds companionship with a rambunctious, talking dog named Spank. It was created to capture the whimsical and sentimental sensibilities of early 1980s television, successfully bridging the gap between traditional children's animation and the growing market for character-driven slice-of-life narratives.

The character design was intended to emphasize Spank’s expressive, almost human-like personality, which helped the show stand out in an era dominated by more action-oriented series.
