Where it came from
Ohayou no Uta, or Morning Song, was produced by NHK as a segment intended for early morning children’s programming. Developed within the context of Japan’s public broadcasting mission to provide educational and developmental content for young audiences, it functioned as a gentle, rhythmic introduction to the start of the day, emphasizing routine and positive outlooks through music and visual animation.
The aesthetic of the segment reflects the mid-century house style of NHK’s creative department, which focused on clean, minimalist character designs and warm, pastel palettes designed to be soothing rather than overstimulating. It was received by domestic audiences as a quintessential piece of broadcast comfort, becoming a nostalgic touchstone for generations of Japanese viewers who grew up with the daily repetition of the piece.
