Where it came from
Ojii-chan no Hanabi, or Grandpa's Fireworks, was produced in 1998 by Yomiuri Advertising as a poignant short-form animation project. It emerged during a period when Japanese studios were increasingly exploring sensitive, emotionally resonant themes through short-form visual storytelling, moving away from high-octane action to focus on intergenerational bonds and the quiet passage of time.
The production sought to capture a gentle, nostalgic aesthetic, emphasizing a warm color palette to mirror its heartfelt narrative about a grandfather attempting to recreate a memory for his grandchild. While it remains a niche piece within the broader landscape of 1990s animation, it is remembered by enthusiasts for its sincerity and for representing the softer, character-driven creative output of the Yomiuri Advertising studio during the late nineties.
