Where it came from
Ojii-chan ga Kaizoku Datta Koro, released in 2003 and directed by Yōichi Higashi, was adapted from a popular children's novel by Atsuko Asano. The film fits within the tradition of Japanese magical realism, focusing on a young boy who discovers his grandfather’s secret past as a pirate. By grounding fantastical elements in the emotional life of a child, the production sought to explore themes of generational connection and the shifting nature of memory.
The film's visual language leans into a nostalgic, atmospheric aesthetic intended to reflect the protagonist's internal imaginative world. Higashi, known for his deliberate pacing and focus on character-driven narratives, opted for a gentle, subdued style that contrasts with typical high-energy adventure films. Upon its release, it was recognized for its sensitive direction and performances, cementing its status as a quiet but significant entry in early 2000s Japanese independent cinema.
