Where it came from
Released in 2000, Ojarumaru: Yakusoku no Natsu Ojaru to Semira was the first theatrical film adaptation of the beloved long-running anime series Ojarumaru, created by Rin Inumaru and produced by Studio Gallop. The film was developed during the height of the show's popularity on NHK, expanding the whimsical, time-traveling antics of the Heian-era prince Ojarumaru Sakanoue into a feature-length narrative set during a single, poignant summer.
The production sought to maintain the distinct, minimalist aesthetic of the original television series while elevating the emotional stakes through its exploration of the friendship between Ojarumaru and the cicada character, Semira. Directed by Akitaro Daichi, the film was well-regarded by fans and critics alike for successfully translating the series' gentle, philosophical humor into a cinematic format, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of the Ojarumaru franchise.
