Where it came from
OL Kaizou Kouza, or Office Lady Transformation Course, was released in 1990 as a two-episode original video animation produced by TMS Entertainment. It emerged during the height of the OVA boom in Japan, a period characterized by experimental storytelling and the exploration of niche genres that were often too unconventional or brief for television broadcast.
The series is noted for its comedic take on the rigid expectations of Japanese corporate culture during the late eighties and early nineties. Directed by Osamu Dezaki under the pseudonym Matsuura Jinbei, the production leans into a satirical, hyperbolic style that plays with the visual tropes of the era, reflecting the studio's desire to push the boundaries of office-based comedy animation before it was eventually shelved in favor of more mainstream projects.
