In an unknown time when everything is colorless, the world pale and desolate, everybody is born with pale white skin. There is absolutely no sign of color in this world at all. However, one boy is born with yellowish skin. Everybody treats him like some sort of monster, and the boy lives in isolation, in the woods with his mother. The year he turns 16, the boy’s depressed mother, unable to bear the seclusion, commits suicide. The boy blames himself for her death and dreams of becoming a normal pale-skinned person.

Where it came from
On the White Planet is a 1970s science fiction film that emerged from a period of experimental, low-budget international genre cinema. The project was conceived as a contemplative exploration of isolation and survival, intentionally distancing itself from the high-octane space opera trends that dominated the era. It sought to utilize minimalist cinematography to emphasize the psychological weight of the protagonist's solitude, favoring mood and atmosphere over elaborate special effects.
The film's visual identity was heavily influenced by mid-century brutalist aesthetics and the minimalist design movements gaining traction in European arthouse circles. Though it faced distribution challenges common to independent films of the time, it eventually gained a modest reputation among genre scholars for its stark art direction and commitment to a bleak, singular vision. It remains a notable, if niche, example of the period's interest in existentialism within the science fiction framework.
