Where it came from
Ontology, in the context of philosophy and computer science, refers to the systematic study of the nature of being, existence, or reality. In historical philosophy, the term was formally established in the 17th century by thinkers like Rudolf Göckel and Jakob Lorhard to categorize the fundamental entities that constitute the world. It emerged as a bridge between metaphysics and logic, seeking to define the properties of objects and the relationships between them in a way that remains a cornerstone of analytical discourse.
The modern evolution of ontology shifted significantly with the rise of information science and the semantic web. Researchers such as Thomas Gruber popularized the definition of an ontology as an explicit specification of a conceptualization. This framework was designed to facilitate knowledge sharing among artificial intelligence systems, allowing machines to understand the hierarchy and interconnectedness of data points. It is viewed not as a single designed object, but as a evolving linguistic and technical structure that continues to shape how human knowledge is encoded for computational use.
