Where it came from
One Last Wish, written by Dorothy Richardson and published in 1993, is a notable entry in the Lurlene McDaniel bibliography, a prolific series of young adult novels centered on themes of terminal illness and loss. Produced during a period when the genre of 'problem novels' was experiencing a surge in popularity, the story focuses on a protagonist navigating a diagnosis of cancer, reflecting the author’s long-standing commitment to portraying the emotional realities faced by teenagers in medical settings.
McDaniel’s work is characterized by a direct, unadorned prose style intended to provide comfort and relatability to a readership often grappling with their own health challenges or the loss of peers. The cover art and design choices of the 1993 release followed the standard aesthetic for teen paperbacks of the early 1990s, utilizing approachable, emotive imagery to signal the sentimental and poignant nature of the narrative to potential readers in school libraries and bookstores.
