Where it came from
Heart of Gold was produced by Toei Animation as a television special to serve as a prologue and promotional tie-in for the 2016 theatrical release, One Piece Film: Gold. The narrative focuses on the hunt for the legendary Pure Gold, an elusive treasure tied to the enigmatic antagonist Gild Tesoro. As a standalone bridge between series arcs, it was crafted to deepen the lore of the film’s central villain while maintaining the high-energy, adventurous tone characteristic of the long-running One Piece franchise.
The production sought to maintain the visual consistency of the anime series while incorporating cinematic flair to align with the film's aesthetic. Under the direction of Tatsuya Nagamine, the special received a generally positive reception from the dedicated fanbase for its character-driven moments and the expansion of the franchise's world-building. It remains a notable entry in the collection of supplementary One Piece content, favored for bridging the transition between the Dressrosa arc and the subsequent Film: Gold cinematic experience.
