Where it came from
Released in 2024 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the One Piece anime, this collaborative short film was produced by Toei Animation in partnership with the popular illustration brand Kawaisouni!. The project serves as a playful, stylized reimagining of iconic scenes from the series, specifically focusing on the emotional resonance of the Straw Hat's journey through the whimsical aesthetic of the 'Opanchu Usagi' artist, Kaeru Matate.
The design approach strips away the intense, high-stakes visual language of Eiichiro Oda's original manga in favor of a soft, absurdist, and minimalist style that characterizes Kawaisouni!'s broader body of work. By contrasting the serious tone of the original narrative moments with a deliberately childlike and simplified animation style, the film was designed to invite a broader audience to engage with One Piece lore through a lens of contemporary internet culture and visual humor.
