Where it came from
Oretachi Majikou Destroy, also known as We Are the Magic High School Destroyers, originated as a manga series by Marita Yamada that began serialization in 2015. It was conceived as a satirical take on the idol industry, focusing on a group of high school students who are recruited to form an idol unit against their wills, subverting typical tropes found in the genre by blending comedy with the realities of entertainment management.
The 2023 anime adaptation produced by Studio MAPPA was highly anticipated given the studio's reputation for high-quality animation. While the manga relies heavily on absurdist humor and dynamic character interplay, the adaptation sought to translate this specific brand of chaotic energy into an animated format, focusing on expressive character designs that reflect the protagonists' frustration with their unwilling path to stardom.
