Two loose and cute cats, Riri and Popo, go on short animated adventures based on “enriching everyday life with everyone’s geek activities and promotions.” Riri is a "menhera" (mentally unstable) cat not blessed by the idol she supports while Popo is an airheaded cat who is cute in a devilish way. Otakuchanzu is the first anime to be originally created for TikTok.

Where it came from
Otaku-chans is a 2023 original net animation series produced in Japan, emerging from a contemporary trend of slice-of-life shorts designed for rapid consumption on social media platforms. The production was conceived to explore the humorous and relatable tropes of modern fan culture, focusing on the daily lives and social interactions of young hobbyists. By utilizing a simplified, highly expressive aesthetic common to web-based animation, the series aimed to resonate with digital-native audiences who frequent platforms like YouTube and Twitter for quick entertainment.
The character designs were crafted to emphasize specific archetypes within the fandom, relying on stylized, exaggerated visual cues to communicate personality traits instantly. The project was received as a lighthearted commentary on the intersection of identity and media consumption. While it operates within the broader context of independent digital animation, it reflects the ongoing evolution of how niche community experiences are translated into approachable, episodic content for a global online viewership.
