Where it came from
The Osomatsu-san Movie: Gekijou Koukai Kinen - Original Tanpen Gekijou was released in 2019 to coincide with the theatrical premiere of the feature film Eiga no Osomatsu-san. Produced by Studio Pierrot, this series of short films serves as promotional material that leans into the absurdist, slapstick humor characteristic of the modern adaptation of Fujio Akatsuka’s classic manga. These shorts were designed to bridge the gap between the television series and the film, capturing the chaotic energy of the sextuplets as they navigate various short-form comedic scenarios.
The design of the shorts maintains the vibrant, clean aesthetic established by the 2015 series reboot, which updated the 1960s character designs to resonate with contemporary audiences. By focusing on rapid-fire gag sequences, the production team aimed to reinforce the show’s reputation for meta-humor and character-driven dysfunction. The shorts were well-received by fans of the franchise as a nostalgic yet fresh accompaniment to the cinematic release, effectively maintaining the momentum of the series' resurgence.
