Where it came from
Released in 1990, Osu!! Karate Bu is a four-episode original video animation (OVA) series produced by J.C.Staff and based on the long-running manga by Koji Takahashi. The series emerged during a peak period for the delinquent (yankii) subgenre in Japanese animation, capturing the raw, hyper-masculine aesthetic prevalent in late 1980s and early 1990s manga culture.
The animation reflects the gritty, aggressive character designs characteristic of the era, focusing on intense physical confrontations and the rigid hierarchy of school-based martial arts clubs. While the series was designed to appeal to fans of high-octane action and comedic melodrama, it is often remembered more for its stylistic commitment to the tropes of the period rather than as a mainstream success, representing a specific niche of J.C.Staff's early experimental catalog.
