16-year-old Yukito Kirihara lives with his 14-year-old sister Sana, who he treasures more than anyone else. But when an ogre shows up outside of his window looking for Sana (a shocking event in its own right), Yukito leaps to save her—and is killed. He's offered the promise of reincarnation by a mysterious woman, who gives him a character sheet in a mysterious book. But when Yukito sees Sana in there, too, he sets off to find her, and save them both—even if he only has 1 hp with which to do it!

Where it came from
Otherworldly Munchkin: Let's Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP! is a 2024 anime adaptation produced by Studio Durandal, rooted in the popular light novel genre that deconstructs traditional fantasy tropes. The series follows the subversion of the typical 'overpowered protagonist' narrative by placing the lead character in a high-stakes scenario where efficiency and speed-running mechanics are essential for survival. It reflects a growing trend in Japanese animation toward meta-commentary on role-playing game culture and the optimization-focused playstyle favored by modern digital gamers.
The character designs were overseen by Durandal's creative team, who aimed to emphasize a minimalist, agile aesthetic that contrasts sharply with the dense, ornate visual style of typical dungeon-crawling adventures. By stripping away complex defensive gear in favor of a glass-cannon build, the visual direction focuses on fluid motion and high-tempo combat choreography. Critics have noted that the series succeeds in balancing its frantic, technical premise with a character-driven narrative, marking it as a distinct entry in the studio’s catalog of light-hearted yet fast-paced productions.
