Where it came from
Other Worlds, released in 1999, emerged during a transitional period in Japanese animation where independent creators began leveraging digital tools to bypass traditional studio constraints. Produced as an original net animation (ONA), it stands as an early experiment in the distribution of short-form, self-contained narratives directly to viewers via the burgeoning internet infrastructure of the late nineties.
The creative direction focused on atmospheric world-building and minimalist aesthetic choices, favoring stylistic expression over the high-budget cel animation typical of television productions of that era. While the project remained a niche endeavor, it is frequently cited by animation historians as a precursor to the decentralized creator-led models that would eventually define the independent web-animation landscape.
