Where it came from
Otsukare-san is a mascot character originating from the public broadcaster NHK, primarily serving as a visual element during programming transitions and station breaks. The character was developed to embody the Japanese cultural sentiment of expressing gratitude for a day's hard work, acting as a friendly, low-key presence that helps soften the tone of corporate broadcasting.
The design follows the tradition of Japanese yuru-chara, emphasizing simplicity, approachability, and a slightly melancholic yet comforting aesthetic. While NHK employs various mascots across its channels, Otsukare-san represents the broadcaster's effort to humanize the interface between the network and its domestic audience, finding resonance through its understated and relatable design language.
