Otsuki-sama to Kageboushi

Otsuki-sama to Kageboushi, meaning The Moon and the Shadow, emerged from the creative output of NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, which has a long tradition of producing educational and artistic animated shorts. This piece was crafted to fit within the stylistic framework of Minna no Uta, a legendary long-running program that pairs original songs with creative, often experimental, short-form animation designed to resonate with viewers of all ages.

The production utilized the distinct visual language characteristic of mid-century Japanese public broadcasting animation, emphasizing a gentle, melancholic aesthetic that focuses on folklore-inspired themes. By blending contemplative lyrical content with hand-drawn visuals, the studio aimed to evoke a sense of quiet wonder. Upon its release, it was well-received by the domestic audience as a poetic contribution to NHK’s programming, praised for its minimalist charm and thematic depth.
