Parasite Dolls

Parasite Dolls was released as a three-part original video animation (OVA) series in 2003, produced by the studio AIC and distributed internationally by ADV Films. Set within the same fictional universe as the Bubblegum Crisis series, the narrative explores a specialized police unit known as the Branch, tasked with investigating crimes involving humanoid robots called Boomers. The production reflects the gritty, tech-noir aesthetic prevalent in early 2000s Japanese animation, focusing heavily on philosophical questions regarding artificial intelligence and urban isolation.

The series was directed by Kazuto Nakazawa and Jouji Shimura, who sought to capture the darker, investigative tone of hard-boiled detective fiction. The character designs were influenced by the established visual language of the AD Police Files, aiming for a grounded, realistic look that contrasted with the more fantastical elements of its sister series. While the OVAs were well-regarded by fans of the cyberpunk genre for their mature storytelling and atmosphere, they are often viewed as a niche entry point within the expansive Bubblegum Crisis franchise.
