Parasite Piano

The Parasite Piano, featured in the 2019 Bong Joon-ho film Parasite, is a custom-designed prop integral to the film's claustrophobic and atmospheric narrative. It was crafted by the production design team led by Lee Ha-jun, whose meticulous vision for the Park family residence emphasized high-end minimalism and subtle, unsettling aesthetic choices. The piano was intentionally positioned as a centerpiece of the living room, designed to blend into the home's sleek, modern architectural lines while serving as a silent, looming witness to the domestic turmoil and social inequality unfolding within the house.

The instrument’s design reflects the broader thematic goals of the film, focusing on textures and shadows to evoke a sense of quiet anxiety. By choosing a sophisticated, monochromatic look for the piece, the design team underscored the rigid, cold environment of the wealthy family. Upon the film's international critical acclaim and historic Academy Award sweep, the prop became an iconic symbol of modern cinema, representing the intersection of high-concept production design and narrative precision. It remains a notable example of how film furniture can transcend its utility to become a character in its own right.
