Where it came from
Peter of Placid Forest was produced in 1980 by Nippon Animation as a special television presentation. It served as a standalone adaptation based on the long-running series of children's stories by Thornton W. Burgess, which chronicle the lives of various woodland creatures. The production arrived during a prolific era for Nippon Animation, which had built its reputation on literary adaptations, particularly through the World Masterpiece Theater strand.
The character design for the special aimed to capture the gentle, whimsical aesthetic of the original source material's illustrations, focusing on a soft, anthropomorphic style intended to appeal to younger audiences. While it functioned as a standalone entry rather than a serial, it was received as a faithful contribution to the canon of classic animation that defined the studio's output during the late 20th century.
