In a Japan not quite like our own, the "youkai" (supernatural creatures) have started living together with humans. Now, in an ordinary school, all sorts of "monsters" attend regular classes. A human boy, Oohashi Shingo, finds himself attracted to one of these creatures, a "petopeto" called Fujimura Hatoko. Petoko, as she is called, is a minor monster, with only the power to stick to something she adores. Like Shingo....

Where it came from
PetoPeto-san, an anime television series produced by the animation studio Xebec, debuted in 2005. It emerged during a period when the studio was heavily engaged in diversifying its portfolio between action-oriented mecha series and lighter, character-driven narratives. The show fits into the slice-of-life and comedy genre, centering on the unusual domestic dynamics of a young boy who discovers his family consists of various mythological beings, or 'petos'.
The series draws heavily upon the aesthetic conventions of mid-2000s Japanese animation, prioritizing expressive character designs intended to emphasize the whimsical and often chaotic nature of the protagonist's home life. While the production benefited from the technical expertise of Xebec’s veteran animation team, it was received as a niche entry within the studio's broader catalog, noted by fans of the era for its gentle humor and lighthearted approach to supernatural themes.
