Where it came from
Phantom Quest Corp. was produced by the legendary studio Madhouse in 1994, emerging during a period when the original video animation format was flourishing as a medium for experimental and niche storytelling. The series follows Ayaka Kisaragi, a private detective specializing in supernatural investigations, capturing the late-twentieth-century trend of urban fantasy narratives that blended mystery, humor, and occult elements within a contemporary Japanese setting.
The series was directed by Koichi Chigira and features character designs by the influential artist Hitoshi Ueda. Eschewing the darker, more visceral tone of some of the studio's other projects from the era, the creators aimed for a lighthearted, episodic adventure aesthetic. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of 1990s cult animation for its polished production values and the stylistic flair characteristic of Madhouse's work during this decade.
