Phantom: The Animation

Phantom: The Animation was released in 2004 by Studio KSS as a three-part original video animation series. It serves as an adaptation of the visual novel Phantom of Inferno, developed by Nitroplus, which centers on a young man kidnapped and brainwashed by an assassin syndicate known as Inferno. The project sought to translate the dark, noir-inspired themes and intricate gunplay of the source material into an animated format, capitalizing on the popularity of the original game in the mid-2000s.

The production was helmed by director Koji Yoshikawa, who aimed to capture the gritty, high-stakes atmosphere characteristic of the series' central conflict. While the visual novel is celebrated for its narrative depth and multiple branching paths, the animation focused on condensing the primary arc into a concise series of episodes. Reception was generally mixed, with audiences noting that while it successfully replicated the aesthetic and tone of the original work, it faced challenges in mirroring the complex character development found in the interactive game.
