Where it came from
Pikachu no Obake Carnival, or Pikachu's Ghost Carnival, was released in 2005 as a special short film tied to the eighth Pokémon feature film, Mew and the Wave Guiding Hero: Lucario. Produced by OLM, Inc., these shorts were a staple of the annual summer theatrical releases in Japan, designed to offer a whimsical, self-contained narrative that provided a lighter counterpoint to the more dramatic tone of the primary feature films.
The short was crafted as a seasonal treat for younger fans, centering on a spooky, supernatural theme that leaned into the 'Ghost' type Pokémon aesthetic. Like many of the Pikachu shorts, it was designed with a focus on non-verbal storytelling and visual comedy, utilizing an expressive animation style that allowed the Pokémon characters to convey personality without the constraints of complex dialogue. It remains a notable piece of mid-2000s Pokémon media, capturing the aesthetic evolution of the studio’s work during the Advanced Generation era.
