A fifth-year elementary student named Eiji Tōmatsu, and his "inspiration" buddy, a dog named Pochirou. One day Eiji finds a mysterious book called the "Pikachin Research Book," and learns about the seven tools that make up the Pikachin Kit. Eiji presses a button inside the research book, and immediately a "Future Amazon" delivery arrives at his door with the kit. Eiji uses the blueprints included in the box to assemble the kit, but it seems as though 1% part of the kit is still missing.
In the franchise, the word "Pikachin" means the flash of inspiration or insight one gets about a new project, similar to the visual of a lightbulb turning on above one's head when someone has an idea. The concept of the franchise is "invention is 99% plastic models, 1% inspiration."

Where it came from
Pochitto Hatsumei: Pikachin-Kit originated in 2018 as a multimedia project designed to engage younger audiences with the creative process of invention. Produced by the studio OLM, the series follows the protagonist Eiji Tooyama as he discovers 'Pikachin-Kits,' miniature schematic-like devices that can be assembled into gadgets to solve everyday problems. The show serves as a narrative vehicle for a corresponding line of hobby kits, encouraging viewers to build physical versions of the inventions seen on screen.
The aesthetic of the series leans into a playful, DIY-inspired visual style, emphasizing the 'Eureka' moment of discovery. The character designs and the mechanism of the Pikachin-Kits were crafted to appeal to children interested in STEM concepts and model building. While the anime functions as an extended advertisement for the Bandai-manufactured model kits, it was received as a lighthearted, educational adventure that frames frustration-based problem solving as an accessible and rewarding pastime.
