Where it came from
Explorers of Sky: Beyond Time and Darkness is a 2009 animated special produced by the animation studio OLM to coincide with the release of the video game Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. The narrative serves as a prologue and expansion to the game's emotional arc, focusing on the character Grovyle and his mission to prevent the paralysis of the planet. It was released as a promotional tool in Japan to deepen the lore surrounding the game's complex time-travel plot.
The animation reflects OLM's distinct aesthetic for the Pokémon franchise during that era, prioritizing character expression and atmospheric tone to convey the high stakes of the game's narrative. Directed with an emphasis on the dramatic tension of the Mystery Dungeon series, it was generally well-received by fans of the franchise for its departure from the standard episodic television format, providing a darker, more cinematic look at the world of Pokémon.
