Where it came from
Poyopoyo Kansatsu Nikki, known simply as Poyopoyo, premiered in 2012 as a short-form anime series produced by Studio DEEN. The show is based on the four-panel manga by Rū Tatsuki, which chronicles the daily, mundane, and often whimsical life of a round, bouncy, orange cat named Poyo. The adaptation was directed by Akitaro Daichi, a filmmaker celebrated for his distinctively comedic and fast-paced approach to slice-of-life storytelling.
The character design centers on the absurdly circular physique of the protagonist, which serves as a visual punchline throughout the series. Studio DEEN utilized a vibrant, minimalist aesthetic that stayed true to the source material’s simplicity. Upon release, the series was received as a lighthearted, low-stakes comfort watch, notable for its brevity and its charming depiction of the unconventional bond between a feline and its human family.
