Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2012, this animated commercial was produced by Studio Colorido to promote the mobile game Puzzle & Dragons. Directed by Hiroyasu Ishida, the short piece was designed to showcase the studio's vibrant, fluid aesthetic, which was then gaining traction for its whimsical departure from traditional, rigid commercial animation. The project served as a creative bridge between independent animation talent and the booming Japanese mobile gaming market.

The spot focuses on the tactile, colorful nature of the game's orb-matching mechanic, translating digital gameplay into a kinetic visual experience. Ishida utilized a distinct, energetic style that prioritized character movement and expressive layouts, which was well-received for its ability to elevate a simple gaming advertisement into a brief, standalone piece of art. Its success highlighted the effective collaboration between high-concept animation studios and the commercial gaming industry.
