Provenance

Where it came from

Qin Shi Mingyue: Kong Shan Niao Yu, or The Legend of Qin: Birds Withering in the Empty Mountains, is a 2014 spin-off ONA series produced by Sparkly Key Animation. As a prequel to the main Legend of Qin franchise, it focuses on the character Bai Feng during his youth within the Quicksand assassin organization. The production served as an expansion of the franchise's cinematic ambitions, utilizing high-fidelity 3D character modeling and dynamic action choreography to elevate the visual standards of Chinese web animation at the time.

The series was designed to explore the tragic backstory and moral ambiguity of the fan-favorite character Bai Feng. The artistic direction leaned into a wuxia-inspired aesthetic, emphasizing fluid movement and melancholic atmosphere. Upon its release, it was well-received for its mature tone and technical improvements over earlier entries in the franchise, effectively bridging the gap between historical fantasy storytelling and modern digital animation techniques.
