In Ayodhya, the royal palace of Kosala kingdom in ancient India, four princes were born to three queens, each of whom grew to great stature. After being banished from the palace for fourteen years due to court intrigue, Prince Rama retreated to the forest with his beautiful wife Sita. Then, Rama, who had vanquished the demons of the forest, invites the wrath of the demon king Ravana, and his wife Sita is kidnapped. Rama goes to rescue Sita with the help of the monkey army. But while fighting the powerful Ravana army, his brother Lakshmana is seriously wounded. At this time, Hanuman, the general of the monkey army, flew to the Himalayas and carried a mountain of medicinal herbs that healed his wounds, saving his life. Eventually, Rama's army defeated Ravana's army using the "Heavenly Weapons" and returned to Ayodhya in triumph.

Where it came from
The 1992 film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama was the result of a unique cultural collaboration between Indian filmmaker Ram Mohan and Japanese animation masters Yugo Sako and Koichi Sasaki. Conceived in 1983 after Sako became fascinated by the epic while filming a documentary on the Ramayana in India, the project aimed to translate the ancient Sanskrit scripture into a universal visual language. The production brought together hundreds of artists from both countries, blending traditional Japanese anime aesthetics with Indian narrative storytelling and character design.
The film's visual design was heavily influenced by the distinct art styles of the two nations, utilizing traditional cel animation techniques to depict the life of Prince Rama. The project sought to honor the sanctity of the epic while utilizing the expressive medium of animation to reach younger audiences. Upon its completion, the film received critical appreciation for its ambitious scale and respectful adaptation, eventually becoming a staple of Indian television broadcasts, where its blend of Eastern animation sensibilities and Hindu mythology earned it a lasting legacy as a definitive cinematic interpretation.
