Reconguista in G the Movie II Bellri’s Fierce Charge

Reconguista in G the Movie II: Bellri’s Fierce Charge was released in 2020 as the second installment in a five-part film series compiling and refining the 2014 television anime Gundam Reconguista in G. The project was initiated to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Gundam franchise, with original series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino returning to rewrite and re-edit the narrative. Tomino’s intent was to clarify the complex world-building and dense plot of the original television broadcast, offering a more streamlined perspective on the journey of the protagonist, Bellri Zenam, and his involvement in the conflict between the Earth-based Capital Territory and the space-faring Amerian Forces.

The film maintains the distinct visual identity established by character designer Kenichi Yoshida and mechanical designers Akira Yasuda, Ippei Gyobe, and Kimitoshi Yamane. The production leaned into the vibrant, unconventional aesthetic that defined the series, which marked a departure from the grittier militarism often associated with the Gundam brand. While the original television series faced criticism for its convoluted storytelling, the film adaptation was generally received as a more coherent and polished version of Tomino's vision, praised by fans for its fluid animation and its exploration of themes concerning energy scarcity and human interconnectedness.
