Where it came from
Ring ni Kakero 1 was produced by Toei Animation in 2004 as a long-awaited television adaptation of Masami Kurumada’s classic 1970s manga series. The project emerged during a period of renewed interest in Kurumada's work, aiming to modernize the narrative of Ryuji Takane’s journey through the world of competitive boxing while maintaining the high-stakes, dramatic intensity characteristic of the original print run.
The series was directed by Toshiaki Komura, who worked to translate Kurumada's distinct, muscular art style into an animated format that favored bold lines and stylized action. Upon its release, the adaptation was noted for its commitment to the aesthetic of the original manga, serving as both a tribute to 1970s sports anime traditions and a bridge for a new generation of viewers.
