Where it came from
Ring ni Kakero 1: The Pacific War, released in 2006, serves as the second season of the anime adaptation of Masami Kurumada’s seminal 1977 sports manga. Produced by Toei Animation, the series continues the high-stakes narrative of Ryuji Takane, a young boxer mentored by his sister Kiku, as he transcends local rivalries to face global competition. The production aimed to modernize the aesthetic of the classic 1970s source material while maintaining the hyper-stylized intensity and exaggerated character archetypes that defined Kurumada’s signature style.
The character designs for this adaptation were handled by Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno, renowned illustrators whose work on iconic projects like Saint Seiya gave this series its distinctive, dramatic look. They emphasized flowing lines and dramatic shading to convey the visceral physical impact of the boxing matches. Upon its release, the series was well-received by fans of the original manga for its faithfulness to the source’s tone, successfully bridging the gap for a new generation of viewers while satisfying long-term followers of Kurumada’s work.
