Where it came from
Ruguo Lishi Shi Yi Qun Miao, often translated as If History Were a Group of Cats, originated as a webcomic series before being adapted into an ONA by Fatchi Moxie Studio. The project was conceived to make Chinese history more accessible and engaging for a younger audience by reimagining historical figures and significant events through the lens of personified cats. This creative pivot was designed to soften the gravity of complex dynasties and political shifts, using humor and anthropomorphism to simplify dense educational content.
The production relies on a minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes clarity and character recognition, ensuring the feline personas remain distinct despite the vast scale of Chinese historical figures portrayed. Upon its release, the series received significant attention for its clever use of meta-humor and its ability to condense centuries of history into digestible, bite-sized episodes. It is widely regarded as a successful example of edutainment, balancing historical accuracy with a lighthearted, modern digital art style.
