Where it came from
Battle for Sanctuary, released in 2022, serves as the second season of the CGI-animated reboot of the Saint Seiya franchise, titled Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac. It was produced by Toei Animation to continue the narrative arc from the 2019 series, focusing on the iconic Sanctuary arc where the Bronze Saints must traverse the twelve temples to save Athena. This iteration was designed to modernize Masami Kurumada’s classic 1980s manga for a global audience, moving away from traditional hand-drawn cel animation in favor of 3D computer-generated imagery to appeal to contemporary streaming viewers.
The series received a mixed reception, largely due to its significant departures from the source material in both visual style and character progression. While critics noted the technical improvements in animation quality compared to the 2019 debut, long-time fans often voiced concerns regarding the updated character designs and pacing adjustments. Despite these critiques, the project highlights the ongoing effort by Toei Animation to keep the Saint Seiya intellectual property relevant within the competitive landscape of international streaming platforms.
