Sakura: Haru no Gensou

Sakura: Haru no Gensou, released in 2001, serves as a direct cinematic continuation of the Sakura Wars franchise. It was produced by the studio Madhouse, aiming to bridge the narrative gap between the second and third entries of the popular tactical role-playing game series. The film captures the quintessential essence of the Taisho-era inspired setting, blending historical romanticism with the supernatural combat elements that defined the brand.

The production sought to uphold the high standards of character design established by Kosuke Fujishima, whose aesthetic became synonymous with the franchise. By focusing on the members of the Imperial Floral Assault Group, the creative team aimed to explore interpersonal dynamics during a brief respite from their duties. While primarily targeted at the existing fan base of the games, the film was noted for its polished animation quality and its commitment to the established orchestral themes of composer Kohei Tanaka.
