Sakura Kakumei: Hanasaku Otome-tachi

Sakura Kakumei: Hanasaku Otome-tachi was released in 2020 as a promotional original net animation (ONA) to support the launch of the mobile game of the same name. Produced by the studio CloverWorks, the short film served to introduce the audience to the new cast of characters and the reimagined, futuristic setting of the long-standing Sakura Wars franchise. It was designed to bridge the aesthetic gap between the traditional, historical charm of the series and a new, more modern visual identity.

The animation focused on establishing a high-energy tone that highlighted the franchise's core themes of music, battle, and camaraderie. While the accompanying mobile game faced significant challenges and ultimately concluded its service in 2021, the animation itself was recognized for its polished production quality. It remains a notable, albeit brief, entry in the history of the Sakura Wars intellectual property, reflecting the creative efforts to expand the series to a younger, mobile-first demographic.
