Sakura Wars: The Gorgeous Blooming Cherry Blossoms

Sakura Wars: The Gorgeous Blooming Cherry Blossoms, released in 1997, serves as the initial original video animation (OVA) series based on the highly popular steampunk tactical role-playing game franchise developed by Red Company and Overworks. Produced by Studio Radix, the series was created to expand upon the rich, Taisho-era inspired narrative of the Imperial Assault Force, bridging the gap between game releases and deepening the character arcs for audiences already invested in the Sega Saturn original.

The character designs were originally conceived by Kōsuke Fujishima, whose distinct aesthetic defined the series' blend of traditional Japanese motifs and early twentieth-century mecha fantasy. The animation sought to capture the theatrical charm of the original game, focusing on the lives of performers at the Imperial Theater who moonlight as defenders of Tokyo. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of the franchise for successfully translating the game's atmosphere into a cinematic format, solidifying the series' status as a multimedia cornerstone of the late nineties.
