Shinjuro may be a little young to be the master of a swordsmanship school, but fate didn't give him a choice. Now his position and martial arts skill land him in the middle of serious trouble when the rogue samurai Mikage faces off against the Tokugawa government, and Shinjuro and the small group of swordsmen who train at the school must now protect the town from harm. However, the group won't be challenged until the Tokugawa house calls in a favor, and the young swordsman is forced to duel Mikage himself.

Where it came from
Samurai: Hunt for the Sword, known in Japan as Otogi Zoshi, was produced by Anime International Company (AIC) in 1999 as a direct-to-video original video animation (OVA). Released during a period when the studio was prolific in developing high-concept fantasy and historical action titles, the project sought to capitalize on the enduring popularity of samurai aesthetics within the Japanese animation industry. Its creation reflects the trend of the late 1990s where independent studios utilized the OVA format to experiment with stylized, period-accurate character designs and darker, more mature storytelling that differed from the broadcast television standards of the time.
The animation direction and artistic vision for the project were managed by the internal teams at AIC, who focused on delivering dynamic sword-fighting choreography and a moody, atmospheric tone. While the production was executed with technical competence, it arrived in a crowded market of historical anime, resulting in a niche reception. It is primarily remembered today by enthusiasts of 1990s-era OVAs as a representative example of the studio's mid-career aesthetic, which favored sharp, angular line work and a grounded approach to classic feudal Japanese imagery.
