Where it came from
Senbon Matsubara: Kawa to Ikiru Shounen-tachi was produced by Mushi Production and released in 1992 as an animated feature film. Commissioned by the Kaizu city government in Gifu Prefecture, the film was designed to commemorate the historical efforts of the Satsuma Domain samurai who were tasked with the difficult engineering project of controlling the Kiso River in the 18th century. The narrative focuses on the local youth and their interactions with these historical figures, blending folklore with the region's legacy of flood control and agricultural endurance.
The film was directed by Masami Hata, a veteran animator known for his work on various classic anime titles. In crafting the visual style, the production aimed for an accessible, educational tone suitable for a general audience, emphasizing the natural beauty of the Gifu landscape and the gravity of the historical challenges faced by the community. While the film remained a relatively niche regional project compared to Mushi Production's broader catalog, it is recognized for its commitment to preserving local history through the medium of animation.
