Where it came from
Shanhai Fu Mo Lu, or The Record of Mountain and Sea Demon Slayer, is a Chinese original net animation (ONA) produced in the mid-2010s. It emerged during a period of rapid expansion in the domestic Chinese animation industry, characterized by a shift toward high-quality 3D computer-generated imagery inspired by traditional Chinese mythology and folklore. The series was designed to leverage the popularity of the 'xianxia' genre, blending martial arts, fantasy, and adventure elements to appeal to a growing digital-native audience on domestic streaming platforms.
The animation style and character designs were crafted to capture a distinct aesthetic of supernatural heroism, drawing heavily from the classic text Shan Hai Jing. While the production team focused on creating fluid combat sequences and intricate costuming to distinguish the series within a crowded market, the reception was largely localized to enthusiasts of the genre. As a digital-only work, its legacy is tied to the broader trend of Chinese animation houses experimenting with serialized storytelling and episodic CGI production.
