Where it came from
Shanhai Jing Mima, or The Code of the Classic of Mountains and Seas, was produced by the Chinese streaming platform Youku as a high-concept ONA series. Released to capitalize on the growing interest in domestic animation and the adaptation of ancient Chinese mythological texts, the project was designed to modernize the surreal imagery of the Shanhai Jing through sophisticated 3D computer animation. Its creation reflects a broader industry trend of synthesizing traditional cultural heritage with contemporary science fiction elements to reach a tech-savvy audience.
The series focuses on a narrative that reimagines the mythical creatures and geographies described in the classic text as entities within a complex, often mysterious, technological framework. The design team aimed to balance traditional aesthetic sensibilities with a sleek, polished digital art style. Upon its debut, the show was received as an ambitious visual experiment, drawing attention for its distinct departure from standard fantasy tropes and its commitment to a gritty, high-stakes atmosphere.
