Where it came from
Shanhai Jing: Zaijian Gaoshou is a feature-length animated film produced by Daysview Animation that draws its thematic inspiration from the Shan Hai Jing, the ancient Chinese compendium of mythic geography and beasts. The project emerged from a broader cultural trend in contemporary Chinese media to reinterpret classical literature through the lens of modern 3D animation, aiming to modernize legendary creatures and narratives for a younger audience.
The production sought to blend traditional folklore with high-fidelity visual effects, reflecting the studio's focus on technical craftsmanship within the competitive landscape of domestic animation. While the film was developed to contribute to the expanding universe of Shan Hai Jing adaptations, its reception was marked by discussions regarding the balance between innovative digital design and the preservation of the source material's original, surrealist spirit.
