Where it came from
Shan Hai Ji Hui, or The Classic of Mountains and Seas, was produced by Bilibili to adapt the rich tapestry of ancient Chinese mythology for a modern animated format. Released as an ONA (Original Net Animation), the series seeks to synthesize traditional folklore with contemporary character-driven storytelling, positioning itself within the broader trend of Chinese animation studios looking to revitalize classical literature for a digital-native audience.
The production leans into a distinct aesthetic that balances mythological grandeur with accessible, stylized character designs intended to resonate with younger viewers. While the reception remains rooted in the niche interest of the domestic animation scene, it is recognized for its ambition in translating complex, episodic legendary encounters into a visual medium that reflects the current high-production standards of the Bilibili platform.
