Where it came from
Shiawase ni Nante Naranaide, translated as Don't Become Happy, is a manga series created by the artist Akiko Higashimura. The work emerged from the mid-2000s landscape of josei manga, a genre focused on the daily lives and emotional realities of adult women. Higashimura utilized her signature sharp, observational humor to explore the anxieties and contradictions inherent in societal expectations of success and domestic fulfillment.
The narrative reflects Higashimura’s early professional development, showcasing the stylistic transition toward the expressive, candid storytelling that would later define her mainstream hits. By centering on characters navigating unconventional paths, the series was received as a grounded, somewhat cynical counterpoint to more idealized romances of the period. It remains a notable entry in the author's body of work for its commitment to exploring the complexity of personal happiness over traditional milestones.
