Where it came from
Shiawase no Ouji, or The Happy Prince, was produced by Wako Production and released as an animated film in 1979. It serves as an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic fairy tale, reflecting the 1970s trend in Japanese animation to bring Western literary classics to the screen through high-quality television and feature film productions intended for a family audience.
The film’s design reflects the soft, emotive aesthetic favored by Wako Production during this period, focusing on a poignant visual narrative that captured the melancholic yet hopeful spirit of the original text. While the production is not as widely documented as the output of larger contemporary studios like Toei or TMS, it is recognized by animation historians as a sincere attempt to translate European fables into the distinct stylistic language of late-Showa era anime.
