Si Ji

Si Ji, or Four Seasons, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio during the mid-20th century. It stands as a notable example of the studio’s commitment to integrating traditional Chinese artistic aesthetics, such as ink-wash painting and calligraphy, with the medium of animation. The film was created as part of the studio’s mission to cultivate a distinct national style that broke away from the conventions of Western animation, focusing instead on poetic narrative and atmospheric visual storytelling.

The production process heavily relied on the expertise of master artists who practiced the traditional brushwork techniques synonymous with the region's cultural heritage. By utilizing delicate wash techniques, the animators aimed to capture the subtle transitions of nature through the four seasons. Upon its release, the film was received as an artistic achievement in experimental animation, praised both domestically and internationally for its ethereal beauty and technical innovation in creating depth and fluidity without reliance on traditional cel animation outlines.
