Where it came from
The Sinbad: Sora Tobu Hime to Himitsu no Shima pilot was developed as a promotional precursor to the 2015 animated feature film produced by Nippon Animation and Shirogumi. Created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Nippon Animation, the project sought to modernize the classic Sinbad lore for a contemporary audience while maintaining a high standard of hand-drawn animation techniques fused with modern digital artistry.
The character design and visual direction were helmed by Yoshiharu Sato, a veteran animator known for his extensive work with Studio Ghibli. Sato aimed for a warm, nostalgic aesthetic that evoked the adventurous spirit of 1970s and 80s anime. The pilot was well-received by industry observers for its cohesive visual identity and served as a proof-of-concept that successfully secured the production of the full-length trilogy of films.
